The smell of the popcorn, relaxing into a comfy seat, a cool drink carefully perched in the armrest, the room growing quiet as the lights go down…you can't beat the cinema!
Which is why we’ve put together this month-by-month guide of the most talked about films for 2022.
It’s your cinematic calendar, made just for you!
January
Scream
This 5th instalment of the Scream franchise promises our old favs David Arquette and Courtney Cox. We’re not sure if it will be the next chapter or a fresh start but, either way, we’re very excited to be taking a trip down memory lane.
February
Death on the Nile
This Agatha Christie adaption sees Sir Kenneth Branagh return as detective Hercule Poirot. Following the spectacular success of 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile will also feature big names like Gal Gadot.
March
The Batman
Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves brings us this reboot of the Batman film franchise. This one focuses on a younger Batman so expect an even darker version than previous films. And who is Bruce Wayne, you ask? Well, if you don’t already know, it’s Robert Pattison (we're very excited!). Colin Farrell is also cast as the Penguin.
April
Morbius
Morbius is next of the “Spider-verse” franchise. Morbius becomes a vampire after attempting to cure himself of a rare blood disease. We’re excited to see Michael Keaton make an appearance as spiderman villain Vulture alongside legends like Jared Leto and Matt Smith.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (The secrets of Dumbledore)
Eddie Redmayne returns as inquisitive wizard, Newt Scamander, in the third chapter of this magical spin-off/prequel series that takes place decades before Harry Potter enrolled at Hogwarts. The story picks up after the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald, as Newt and his compatriots continue to pursue the evil wizard (now played by Mads Mikkelsen), leading up to World War II.
Downton Abbey: A new Era
It's been a while since Downton jumped to the big screen in 2019 and we're eager to be transported back to the golden age with this much anticipated sequel! The story unfolds as the family go on a grand journey to France...
May
Doctor Strange in the multiverse of Madness
Benedict Cumberbatch is back again as Doctor Strange and he's pushing the boundaries of the multiverse even further than before. With the help of old and new mythical allies, the complex alternate reality has created a new adversary for Strange.
Top Gun: Maverick
Three decades later, Tom Cruise is back as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell! And apparently sources say that Cruise turned down a return for years up until now, of course. We can't wait to see this long-await sequel and see what the fighter ace is up to now!
June
Jurassic Park: Dominion
The stuff of legend: Jurassic Park is a cinematic institution. Dominion is the third film in the Jurassic World trilogy, the sequel to 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the sixth film in the whole Jurassic Park series and is the conclusion to the Jurassic World saga! The only thing we care about is that Sam Neill and Laura Dern are both returning alongside Goldblum, Bryce Dallas and Chris Pratt – epic!
Lightyear
Buzz is back but this time we find out where the popular space ranger came from and he's no plastic toy - Lightyear is based on a real human astronaut who inspired the action figure. He's also voiced by MCUs Captain America, Chris Evans. To the cinema and beyond...
July
Thor: Love and Thunder
Following on from Thor: Ragnarok, Love and Thunder is the 29th (29th!!) film in the Marvel Universe. Natalie Portman reprises her role as Jane Foster and we might even see her wielding Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. In this prequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, they meet up to face Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher.
October
Halloween Ends
Director David Gordon Green and writers Danny McBride and Scott Teems successfully sequel-booted (is that a word now? reboot-queled, maybe?) the Halloween franchise with 2018’s Halloween. Now they’re giving us all a full trilogy that concludes with the appropriately titled Halloween Ends. We’re guessing Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode will presumably defeat Michael Myers forever.
November
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
In 2020, filmmakers and fans across the world mourned the passing of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. This created questions about what would happen to a Marvel character that was set to become an important piece of the MCU’s future. We’re still getting a second film in 2022 but it's moved to Novemeber due to late production.
Boseman will not be recast, and the story will instead shift to focus on King T’Challa’s spunky sister Shuri, played by Letitia Wright.
December
Aquaman and the lost Kingdom
James Wan returns to the director’s chair for another go at the world of Atlantis and the DC superhero Aquaman (Jason Momoa), who will be joined by Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta).
Avatar 2
It’s taken almost 15 years but we’re finally getting the long-promised follow-up to James Cameron’s once-highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar. Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri now have a family on Pandora, but when old enemies return, they’re forced to evacuate and find a new home. Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and Edie Falco are among the new additions to the cast.
