We know driving on the other side of the road with quirky traffic rules and getting lost might be a bit overwhelming!
So we have gathered our top 5 tips on how to navigates Europe’s roads. The most important tip…
Remember to Drive on the Right!
It may seem strange at first but once you get the hang of it then it’s easy! Remember that oncoming traffic will always be seen coming from the left. Traffic signs will always be on the right and roundabouts will be an anti-clockwise direction. Make sure you take lots of breaks, be vigilant and make sure your passengers are alert and ready to assist at all times.
Watch out for the toll roads
There are around 90 toll roads in France and 40 in Spain. Make sure to check your route before you head off to see if it includes any toll stops. Some toll stops now accept contactless but make sure to keep all the change handy. Some countries such as France will have an toll payment tag that you can purchase before you begin your road trip so it is worth doing some research before you head on holiday.
Got the right kit?
If you are heading on a road trip across Europe you will need to make sure you have the right kit with you. The rules vary from country to country so make sure you are looking at the most up to date information.
The AA have a great downloaded quick guide that shows everything that each driver requires to have in the car or with them when they are travelling through the most popular European countries. You can download it here!
Looking for parking?
The last thing you want to happen is find a parking or traffic fine in your inbox or on your car! Many historical centres and major towns will have restrictions on entering certain areas with residential access only. These areas can sometimes be known as ‘Zona a Traffico Limitato’ or ZTL’s and can be seen on the road signs.
Some strange but quirky road rules
- In some parts of Spain, vehicles must be parked on the same side of the road as all the houses with odd numbers on odd days of the month and on the other side of the road on even days of the month.
- The longest tunnel in Europe is found in Norway and is 15 miles!
- If you are road tripping in Cyprus you can get a fine for eating and drinking while driving!
