There's no one size fits all approach when it comes to car insurance quotes. Your premium is based on things such as:

- The car you’re insuring
- Your driving experience
- Your job
- Your claims history
All these details are then used to determine how likely an insurance company thinks you are to make a claim and what the total cost will be.
A car insurance premium is the amount of money you are charged to take out a particular insurance policy. In other words, it's the amount you pay every month. It's based on how likely your insurance company thinks you are to make a claim.
An excess in car insurance is the amount you have to pay when you make a claim. If you can't afford to be out of pocket or you don't want to pay an excess upfront, it's worth taking out excess insurance to cover the costs.
A compulsory excess is fixed and what the insurers will ask you to pay. A voluntary excess is chosen by you and can affect the price of your premium.
If you made a claim, you would pay your total excess and we’d pay everything else to help repair your car or replace if it was stolen or damaged beyond repair then deduct the excess from it.

The total claim cost - £3,000
The excess:
- Compulsory excess - £300
- Voluntary excess - £200
