Although this insurance cover isn’t a legal requirement it does offer you support and protection if your vehicle breaks down in the middle of a journey.
Home start breakdown cover is similar to roadside assistance only it covers you for when you need help at home rather than out on the road.
Breakdown cover in the UK is an optional add-on to your existing insurance policy. It’s an extra layer of protection that covers you in the event you break down during a trip and need assistance. Should this be the case, a qualified mechanic will be sent to your location.
Roadside assistance is an optional extra on your car insurance policy. It provides you with cover if your vehicle breaks down, you get a flat tyre or run out of petrol/diesel. Should this be the case, Stroll Insurance can arrange to send a qualified mechanic who will fix your vehicle or tow you to the nearest garage.

An excess in car insurance is the amount you have to pay when you make a claim. If you can't afford to be out of pocket or you don't want to pay an excess upfront, it's worth taking out excess insurance to cover the costs.
A compulsory excess is fixed and what the insurers will ask you to pay. A voluntary excess is chosen by you and can affect the price of your premium.
If you made a claim, you would pay your total excess and we’d pay everything else to help repair your car or replace if it was stolen or damaged beyond repair then deduct the excess from it.
Here's an example:
The total claim cost - £3,000
The excess:
- Compulsory excess - £300
- Voluntary excess - £200
We pay - £2,500 You pay - £500
All you have to do is contact our team by email here.
Important to note
We need the following details about your additional driver:
- Full name and date of birth
- Address
- Employment details
- Driving licence details
- Any medical conditions or motor related claims/offences
P.s An additional driver can sometimes bring down the cost of your insurance price, depending on their driving experience. For example, if you add a parent to your policy with a clean driving history. They are seen as a safe driver to insurers BUT it might be the opposite if you add a young driver with little or no driving experience.
Firstly, congrats on the new wheels – health to drive!

Here a just a few things you can do to bring down the cost of your car insurance:
1. Paying annually
Paying a lump sum for your insurance will cost you less in the long run as you will need to pay interest and a deposit if you pay in monthly instalments.
2. Build up your No Claims Bonus
If you can avoid making claims for minor issues you can pay yourself, you will earn a discount on the price you pay for your insurance. The longer you go without claiming, the bigger the discount should be.
3. Engine size and car groups
Research the type of car next time you’re buying. Generally, the cheapest cars start in Group 1 and the most expensive are placed in Group 50. High end motors tend to have more powerful engines and generally sit within the higher band of the insurance groups.
4. Avoid modifications
Modifying your car even for cosmetic reasons can often mean more expensive repair costs which is why you'll likely pay a higher insurance for a modified car to cover these.
5. Adding a named driver
Adding an experienced driver to your policy could lower the cost of your insurance.
Why would adding a driver bring down my insurance price?
Because you’re likely to be spending less time driving the car, which means your chances of having an accident and claiming decreases. Don’t forget, if you add a student, young or newish driver it will mean your premium will go up as they are seen as higher risk.
